Bored during quarantine, check these out!

This will not be an in depth review of these books but more my general thoughts on why these are must read books…

Alanna The First Adventure by Tamora Pierce

I am slightly biased with this author as she was the author who originally made me want to become a writer, which is why I couldn’t resist including two of her books on this list. Alanna is the first book that most people read when diving into Tortall, the fictional world that Tamora Pierce creates in her writing. This world is filled with medieval knights and magic, a combination that leaves the reader turning each page with excitement. I first read this book when I was in fifth grade and I have re-read it too many times to count since then. This is one of those ageless books that you can read as a kid and then read again as an adult and be sucked right back into the story with the same enthusiasm of your childhood mind.

Tamora Pierce has a very unique writing style that I have not found with any other author before or since. If you need a good romance plot within your action books then this may not be for you. While there are romantic relationships in this series they do not fully develop in the first book. In most of Tamora Pierce’s writing the romance is a secondary and often nonexistent plot line. Even if you are a romance obsessed individual (like me), I still think this book is worth reading. The interesting characters, suspenseful plot, and fun medieval world will keep you plenty entertained. This is a fun read for anyone and everyone, whether you are in middle school or well into your adult life. This book is definitely on my re-read list for this summer!

Wild Magic by Tamora Pierce

I couldn’t resist adding this book to the list, despite the double author feature. While Alanna is the go to book when beginning to read Tamora Pierce, Wild Magic is my all time favorite book from this author. In fact, it may even be my favorite book period. The main character, Daine, is someone you can instantly sympathize with and I absolutely fell in love with her character. I’m a sucker of the “being able to talk to animals” magic trope and this book took that trope to a whole new level of intrigue. I honestly find it hard to say anything bad about this book. While it may not be for everyone, I think most people will find this a fun page turner. I know I personally can never put it down once I start.

Relentless by Karen Lynch

Karen Lynch is a lesser known author that I stumbled upon a few years back and I absolutely fell in love with her books. Her stories are action packed page turners and the setting is in our world but with a unique supernatural twist. If you like a fast paced read filled with interesting plot lines then you should definitely check out this book. While the first book in this series is great, the second and third books in the trilogy are “stay up till three am because you can’t put it down” amazing! The plot of the first book overshadows the character relationships somewhat, but in the second book you really get to see these relationships come into being. With a half demon warrior race and werewolves and vampires aplenty, how can you not go read this book!

Born at Midnight by CC Hunter

Something isn’t quite right at the Shadow Falls camp that Kylie is shipped off to for the summer. This book is filled with supernatural twists and turns that will keep you reading until early in the am. While the book is targeted at a younger audience, it is one of those books that you can pick up again as an adult and find yourself equally as entertained as when you were a child. While somewhat cliche there are unique world building aspects of this book that keep it feeling new. The pacing of this book is really well done and this is a great book if you are looking for a fun easy read for the summer months. The best part…if you fall in love with the characters as much as I know I did, you can look forward to a long series with spinoffs!

Firebolt by Adrienne Woods

Dragons. Did I say dragons? The world in this book is unique and filled with secrets that will leave you on the edge of your seat. The characters and their relationships carry the story and make you want to keep reading. If you are a grammar freak you may find the little errors in this book to be too annoying, but there is something about the natural unpolished flow of the writing that makes the story all the more intriguing. One of my favorite things about this book and the subsequent series is that it always took me in directions that I wasn’t suspecting. Sometimes I find plot points to be overly cliche and obvious but this book was able to take those cliches and somehow turn them into something new. If you can get past the unpolished writing, this book is definitely a must read book!

P.S. This book is also free right now on amazon!

The Beautiful Pretender by Melanie Dickerson

Melanie Dickerson writes fairytale romance novels set in medieval Europe. These softer romances are so well written and make me fall in love right alongside the main characters every single time. It’s no wonder that she is a best-selling author. While there is a general order in which these books should be read, I’ve found that each book can stand on its own. While I have many loves when it comes to Melanie Dickerson, The Beautiful Pretender is probably my all time favorite. Funnily enough, it is one of the few books that does not follow a particular fairytale trope. The strength of the female lead in this book is something to be admired and the love story is timeless. Add in a good dose of action and secrecy and I was hooked from start to finish. I’m sure you’ll be just as hooked as I was!

The Last Necromancer by CJ Archer

Staying in the realm of historical fiction, this book mixes history, romance, and magic, all while pulling inspiration from the familiar tale of Frankenstein. With the main character, Charlie’s, ability to communicate with and temporarily raise the dead along with other supernatural and scientific forces at work, this book is somewhat of a romantic thriller. The book has an edgy feel to it that feeds the conflict and creates a sizzling tension between the main character and the love interest. Charlie is a fiery, rebellious woman in a time period where women were expected to be demure and refined. Her character’s strength and complexity make her an inspiring example of female empowerment. With interesting side characters and a tall, dark, and protective love interest, this story has it all (at least in my opinion). Well written, spot on pacing, and an intriguing twist on historical fiction, this book is definitely one to check out this summer!

P.S. Another free steal on amazon right now!

The Ranger’s Apprentice by John Flanagan

If you haven’t already heard of this book series then let me be the first to tell you that it is popular for a very good reason. I usually prefer books with a female protagonist but that preference is completely forgotten with this book. The world of Rangers, a secret group of archer spies who work for the king, is so unique and well written that I have no doubt you will be just as in love with this story as I was when I first picked up this book. The character development in this book is out of this world. Each and every character feels real and interesting. My one complaint is that the series is largely male dominated, however, you soon forget about this fact as you are swept up in the action of this book. The relationships developed between the characters in this story are complex and feel so real that the characters truly do come to life. I honestly can’t believe this series hasn’t been made into a movie or a tv series by now. Seriously, go check this series out! You won’t be disappointed.

The False Prince by Jeniffer A. Nielsen

Another male protagonist book for the list. This book, similar to the Ranger’s Apprentice series, is heavily male dominated but the writing and plot entirely made up for the lack of female characters. The complexity of the main character and the high stakes of the plot will keep you flipping pages wanting to see what happens next. While the “big reveal” of the book is fairly easy to guess, I found I didn’t the reveal to be a surprise for this book to keep me interested. The way the story slowly unfolds this mystery to the characters is where the magic of this book truly unfolds. If you are looking for romance, this may not be the book for you. While a love story does exist in this book, it is at best a minor plot line. That being said, the story and characters entirely make up for this lack and despite being a bit romance obsessed myself, I fell in love with this book. The False Prince is definitely on my re-read list for this coming summer.

The Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead

If you have seen the movie that was made based off this popular book, please erase it from your mind. While not horrible, it did not (even in the slightest) do justice to this book. This is an amazing book series that is filled with strong female characters and several epic love stories. The world that Richelle Mead creates, while based off of an overused supernatural creature, makes vampires feel new and exciting. With all the vampire stories out there nowadays, it is hard to find one that truly makes this trope feel fresh and this book does that. With great writing, pacing, and character development, this is a must read book to check out this summer. If you get through the vampire academy series, there is a whole other spinoff series called Bloodlines awaiting you, which in my opinion, may be even better than the original series. These books will no doubt keep you highly entertained during the long summer months!

Final Thoughts

While my personal reading taste is not everyone’s, I genuinely believe that most people will love these books. If I have convinced you, go and give these authors some love and buy their books!
